The Climate Finance Innovators (CFI) project developed the 2nd edition of the Eastern Africa carbon markets portfolio for the Eastern Africa Alliance of Carbon Markets and Climate Finance. These documents provide an up-to-date overview of the achievements of Eastern African countries in the most relevant carbon crediting standards, compiling recent data on carbon market activities and carbon credit issuances. Covering the seven members of the Alliance (Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda), this portfolio focuses on the main highlights of each member country’s carbon market profile and summarizes key findings in a regional profile. This overview finds that Eastern Africa has managed to mobilize more than 500 carbon market activities that have already issued more than 100 million carbon credits across the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and voluntary carbon market (VCM) standards. Eastern Africa is thus well-placed to mobilize benefits from the carbon markets for delivering on their NDC targets. These profiles are also crucial as a basis for making decisions on CDM transition and Article 6 readiness and implementation.
