Piloting Article 6: Experiences from East and West Africa

The event introduces the next generation of global carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Drawing on work from the IKI funded Climate Finance Innovators (CFI) and West African Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance 2020-2023 (WACC) projects, the presentation focuses specifically on the relevance of Article 6 for Africa. These projects aim at establishing innovative linkages between UNFCCC market mechanisms and international climate financing institutions such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF), but also support African countries in accessing carbon markets and climate finance in order to strengthen their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Moreover, both projects work with African climate negotiators to contribute to the design of Paris Agreement policy instruments – in particular Article 6.
