SUMMARY:Piloting Article 6: Experiences from East and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:The event introduces the next generation of global carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Drawing on work from the IKI funded Climate Finance Innovators (CFI) and West African Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance 2020-2023 (WACC) projects\, the presentation focuses specifically on the relevance of Article 6 for Africa. These projects aim at establishing innovative linkages between UNFCCC market mechanisms and international climate financing institutions such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF)\, but also support African countries in accessing carbon markets and climate finance in order to strengthen their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Moreover\, both projects work with African climate negotiators to contribute to the design of Paris Agreement policy instruments – in particular Article 6. \nFind out more: IKI Newsstory – Senegal project approval\nhttps://www.international-climate-initiative.com/en/news/article/100_solar_mini_grids_in_1000_villages_in_senegal

SUMMARY:Long Term Strategies (LTS) as a tool to raise climate ambition. Experiences from Africa
DESCRIPTION:Different countries in Africa are in the process of developing their long-term strategies. In order to demonstrate the benefits of long-term planning and showcase the lessons learned from countries\, the GIZ Global Carbon Markets (GCM) Programme in Uganda and Tunisia with support from the Germany Federal Ministry of Environment\, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety in partnership with the Climate Finance Innovators (CFI) Project and the World Bank conducted a webinar during the Innovate4Climate online sessions. \nFind out more:\nIf you missed any part of the presentation or would like to revisit key sections\, it’s now available via\nhttps://innovate4climate.pathable.co/meetings/uHASBoghzekpwjb86

SUMMARY:Article 6 of the Paris Agreement – What is it and Why is it Important for Business?
DESCRIPTION:Part 2: The Value of Article 6 and Current Implementation Efforts \nArticle 6 of the Paris Agreement aims at promoting integrated\, holistic and balanced approaches that will assist governments in implementing their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) – countries’ national emissions reductions targets – through voluntary international cooperation. This cooperation mechanism\, if properly designed\, could assist countries in raising the ambition of their NDCs and could also help to provide the policy foundation needed for the private sector to further drive investments in a sustainable and net-zero emissions economy\, including through carbon pricing and emissions trading. \nBuilding on notions and insights gained in the previous webinar\, this second webinar looks at Article 6 more in detail. In particular\, it discusses research and modelling work on the environmental and economic potential of Article 6 and reviews ongoing piloting efforts aimed at implementing Article 6 approaches in the real world. It does so by bringing together a panel of key Article 6 practitioners and researchers from different backgrounds. Presentations and panel discussion are followed by an interactive Q&A session with the audience.
