SUMMARY:East African Regional Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Climate Finance Innovators project successfully conducted a one-day workshop on the 2nd October 2019 in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia under the topic ‘Managing the transition from Kyoto to Paris – the potential of carbon markets and climate finance for East Africa’. The objective of the workshop was to facilitate mutual learning about successful elements of climate finance mobilization and to identify common challenges. Stakeholders from several East African countries shared progress updates and experiences relating to the development of funding proposals\, financing mechanisms\, MRV systems and NDC accounting. \nFurthermore\, the workshop participants were invited to attend a subsequent two-day ‘Carbon Markets Dialogue’. The regional dialogue was co-organized by the Climate Finance Innovators together with the GIZ Global Carbon Markets Programme\, both supported by the German Federal Ministry of Environment\, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU)\, and in collaboration with GIZ Energising Development Ethiopia with support from Irish Aid\, as well as the UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centre. \nParticipants gained an improved understanding of the new generation of carbon markets and climate finance instruments of the Paris Agreement. Moreover\, the workshop served to jointly reflect on the successes and failures generated by the Kyoto mechanisms in order to provide input to the ongoing rule-setting for the Paris Agreement’s instruments\, as well as the preparations by East African countries for accessing these funding sources. \n\n\n\nDownload Presentation as PDF

SUMMARY:Webinar | Next Generation Carbon Markets
DESCRIPTION:In this Webinar the Climate Finance Innovators project present and discuss insights from Article 6 negotiations in the lead up to COP25 and analyse the emerging landscape of Article 6 pilots. \nWhile Article 6 was the only item not finalized during COP24\, Parties have made significant progress over the latest negotiation rounds to structure the new carbon market rules and to tackle the remaining technical intricacies of the mechanisms. \nThis period of uncertainty has also given rise to a number of initiatives that aim to test and prepare for these new rules and that already offer vital insights into the potential implementation of Article 6. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou are currently viewing a placeholder content from Youtube. SUMMARY:Piloting Article 6 carbon market cooperation – additionality and methodological issues
DESCRIPTION:This workshop discusses key Article 6 issues for resolution at COP25. Under Article 6\, crediting transformative/sectoral activities becomes important. This new setting impacts how environmental integrity can be ensured through robust additionality determination and baseline setting. Latin American government representatives and international experts will present insights from Article 6 pilots and discuss: How does the NDC influence Article 6 additionality and baseline establishment in order to promote increased ambition and environmental integrity? How can existing tools such as CDM methodologies serve as building blocks for emerging mechanisms? What lessons can be drawn from Article 6 pilots regarding these topics?

SUMMARY:Key lessons from Article 6 pilot activities
DESCRIPTION:The Paris Agreement established a future for carbon markets under Article 6. While the rulebook is still being negotiated\, pilot activities around the world are offering first lessons to take into account in the operationalization. \nThis workshop addressed key stakeholders interested in Article 6 piloting and results-based climate finance from both buyer and seller countries. The session was organized jointly by Perspectives Climate Group\, representing the Climate Finance Innovators Project\, by South Pole and the World Bank. \nPerspectives shared observations and lessons learned from Article 6 readiness and piloting in low-income countries in Africa and LDCs. \nSouth Pole presented key considerations from middle-income countries with a focus on piloting activities in Colombia. \nThe World Bank discussed sub-regional aspects of the piloting activities. \n\n\n\n	Speakers\n\nAXEL MICHAELOWA\nSenior Founding Partner\, Perspectives Climate Group \n\n\nJEFF SWARTZ\nDirector\, Climate Policy and Carbon Markets\, South Pole \n\n\nHARIKUMAR GADDE\nSenior Carbon Finance Specialist\, World Bank \n\n\n\nDownload Flyer

SUMMARY:Carbon Market and Climate Finance support for NDC implementation in Senegal
DESCRIPTION:Senegal is already engaged in a variety of initiatives and efforts seeking international market cooperation under the Paris Agreement and climate funding for its NDC mitigation objectives. Continued capacity strengthening of national bodies and private actors is deemed necessary by the Direction de l’Environnement et des Etablissement Classés (DEEC) from the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD)\, acting as both Senegal’s NDC coordinator\, CDM Designated National Authority as well as National Designated Authority to the GCF. \nThis workshop thus brought together over 80 public and private sector stakeholders to take stock of ongoing initiatives in Senegal and discuss opportunities\, capacity needs and open questions about COP24 Katowice and Paris Agreement Art. 6 current situation\, Senegalese ongoing initiatives on carbon markets and climate finance\, and the underlying opportunities for its NDC implementation. Identified needs\, updated concerns and other outcomes from the workshop will form the basis for further targeted capacity support. \n\nAEE and Climate Focus reported latest updates on Carbon markets under the Paris Agreement\nDEEC\, AERA Group and Meridiam discussed the Senegalese CDM mitigation pipeline – experiences and opportunities\nDEEC and FONSIS reviewed Senegal’s mitigation pipeline for the GCF\nAEE and DEEC explored domestic carbon pricing in Senegal and a national platform for carbon markets and climate finance\n\nA project-specific work-session was also held the day before on the GCF funding for the ASER Rural Electrification programme\, with BOAD and DEEC.\nA consultation meeting on Article 6 pilot initiatives in Senegal took place the day after\, featuring ASER’s Standardized Crediting Framework (SCF) and the National Biogas Program (PNB) proposed transaction with KliK foundation.

SUMMARY:Operationalizing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement
DESCRIPTION:Two-day event which brought together over 40 West African Alliance country representatives and its strategic partners. While the workshop covered a broad spectrum of topics\, two issues stood out in particular: the need to foster the debate on operationalizing Article 6 at member country level and the question how to connect private sector initiatives under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and voluntary carbon markets with the countries’ national aspirations under the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
